How do I set a ride?
Guide for Hares
How to organise a Crankers Ride
What to do a month before
•Once you’ve volunteered, you’ll need to rope in 1 or 2 Co-Hares to help you, its not a good idea to try to do it all. •Choose a location within 5 km distance from a train station and let the Hare-line/Trail Master know ASAP, so it can be announced (the sooner, the better).
•Do a couple of Reccys in the area to see where exactly you want to set the trail and where the drink stops will be. A printed out Google map is great for marking likely spots. •The ride should be between 20-30kms – and a minimum of 2 drink stops (if unsure how to set trail contact the Hare-razer). Don’t forget if you’re setting a falsie always set the correct trail back (not ahead), don’t be afraid to set it a reasonable distance as this helps with the stragglers and don’t set a check after a check. (A check is a circle or arrows in multiple directions which helps keep the pack together). Only set one (or correct) trail from the check, there’s no need to mark in all directions, the idea is for the pack to find it.•Consider whether it’s likely to rain and plan for some cover at your venue in case it does. •In winter it’s dark early and your venue should have lights or you will need to arrange some portable ones. •Decide if you’d like to have a theme and tell the Onsec/Trail Master. •Let the Hare-line/Trail Master know if mountain bikes are needed for the ride or if hashers can get by on road bikes.
What to do a week before
•Decide what food you want to make for about 25-30 people and plan your shopping list. Committee contributes $250 (with receipts) towards good tucker – not just snags on the BBQ. •Have a backup plan if more than 30 people roll up. Know where the nearest fast food outlets are eg: Pizza/Fish & Chips and most importantly, the closest bottle shop. •Speak to Hash Splash – they will organise the trailer (They will have all the booze ready to go, you don’t have to worry about splash supplies.) Discuss what you want at drink stops with them.
What to do on the weekend
•Try and set the trail the day before the ride, (if no rain forecast) including trail from the train station to the venue. Do not set the trail too early and be ready to mark it again on the morning of the ride, because chalk tends to disappear, especially if it rains but also when it’s windy. •Cook the food, it’s best to have it all ready a day ahead of time. Otherwise something simple cooked on the BBQ always works. (Yes the Crankers trailer has a BBQ, check with the trailer tugger to ensure the gas is full). If you are catering with takeaways like pizza, chicken etc ring around a few places and see what sort of a bulk deal you can get. Depending on what time the ride and circle finishes you will have to liaise with the caterer to get it delivered or pick it up.
What to do on the day
•It’s a good idea to check a few parts of the trail to see if your marks are still easy to see. Or you can just mark it on the morning but you will need your Co-Hares to help out (count on at least 3-4 hours to mark the trail, even with help). •You need to ‘sweep the trail’ on the ride or get one of your Co-Hares to do it – ride with the slower people at the end of the main pack with a piece of chalk and cancel all false trails and checks by marking the true direction for the really slow ones or riders who had flats etc. They need a chance to catch up. •Buy some nibbles for the ride. Cheese and crackers, dips, lollies, fruit, etc. all work well, hot soup in winter and watermellon in summer are very popular. •Be ready with your food – you may need to serve the main meal before the circle to stop the fat bastards being pigs. •Make sure the trailer (booze) is at the venue before hashers arrive, liase with the trailer tugger to sort this. •Now you just need to clean up all the cooking/serving stuff and bask in the glory of a job well done. Crankers are an appreciative bunch and recognise that a lot of effort is needed to pull off a ride. And they also know it will be their turn sometime soon.
